Samantha Elandary, MA, CCC-SLP, Executive Director and Co-Founder of the Texas Voice Project for Parkinson Disease graduated from the University of North Texas with her bachelors degree in Communication Disorders and English and her masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology.
She worked for six years in a Dallas hospital where she was encouraged by a movement disorders specialist to become certified in the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT®). After treating her first patient using LSVT, it amazed her how someone with Parkinson disease who could barely speak could learn how to think loud in just four short weeks.
The realities of the insurance world soon set in, though, and Samantha realized that some people with Parkinsons were not receiving the speech treatment they needed and deserved simply because their insurance plans wouldnt cover the treatment.
In 1999, she began her mission to develop a program that would provide every Parkinson patient the opportunity to receive LSVT, regardless of the patients ability to pay for the treatment. She also created The LOUD CrowdTM, a maintenance program which allows LSVT graduates the opportunity to receive on-going vocal practice and encouragement through weekly speech groups, a singing program and other engaging activities. In 2006, Samantha created Texas Voice Project for Parkinson Disease. |
